U.S. Passes GENIUS Act, Financial Institutions Set to Launch Stablecoins

U.S. President Donald Trump has signed the historic GENIUS Act into law, creating the nation’s first regulatory framework for stablecoins. The law bans interest or yield on all stablecoins and requires full backing by reserve assets such as U.S. dollars—ushering in a new era for digital money in the United States.

Jamie Dimon, CEO of JPMorgan Chase, conceded that Wall Street can no longer ignore digital assets. The bank will participate via its JPMorgan Deposit Coin and stablecoin pilots, including JPMD—a blockchain-based token launching on Base, Coinbase’s leading Layer 2.

Citigroup has announced its own stablecoin initiative (“Citi Stablecoin”) to power digital payments and tokenized deposits, while also launching Crypto Custody Solutions for institutional clients.

Standard Chartered has rolled out spot trading for Bitcoin (BTC) and Ethereum (ETH) in the U.K., with trades executed on its established FX platform—making crypto more accessible to institutional and corporate clients.

President Trump is also expected to issue an executive order soon that would permit retirement funds to invest in digital currencies, gold, private equity, and other alternative assets.

Meanwhile, Nasdaq has requested SEC approval to enable staking features for BlackRock’s iShares Ether ETF, following a new SEC ruling that classifies staking rewards as earned income—potentially making them non-taxable.

NFT trading on Ethereum reached $75 million last week—more than half of all NFT activity across blockchains—underscoring the link between ETH’s price surge and growing NFT market momentum.
