What Makes Stablecoins Stable? Learn with Tether!
Stablecoins are digital assets designed to maintain a fixed value such as fiat currencies, commodities like gold or oil, or algorithmic mechanisms. Their main goal is to reduce the extreme price volatility typically seen in the crypto market.
There are three main types of stablecoins:
Fiat-Backed
These stablecoins are pegged to government-issued currencies, most commonly the US dollar. For instance, USDt by Tether is backed 1:1 with USD, ensuring strong confidence in its value and making it widely trusted and used across the crypto ecosystem.
Commodity-Backed
These tokens are backed by real-world assets such as gold, oil, or real estate. An example is Tether Gold (XAUt), where each token is backed by one troy ounce of physical gold. As a result, the token’s value tracks the market price of gold, giving holders both price exposure and digital flexibility.
Algorithmic
These do not rely on physical assets but instead use algorithms or smart contracts to automatically adjust the token supply based on demand. A common mechanism used is “Rebase”, which increases or decreases token supply depending on price fluctuations. While innovative, algorithmic stablecoins tend to be more complex and carry a higher risk of failure or exploitation.
Each type of stablecoin comes with its own benefits and risks. Fiat-backed stablecoins, like USDt, remain the most widely used due to their reliability and transparent collateral.
Before using or holding any stablecoin, it’s important to understand its type and mechanism in order to choose the one that best fits your needs — and to reduce the risk of unexpected loss.
